Sports accident in football: Does accident insurance pay?

Optimally protected

Football – the number one national sport in Germany. A fascinating, but not without danger sport. According to statistics, there are around 1.5 million sports accidents per year. One in three of them happens on the football pitch. Because even a wrong movement while running or a gross foul can injure the knee joint or even lead to a cruciate ligament rupture, for example. In the worst case, it can lead to long-term impairments.

Therefore, it makes sense to cover it with private accident insurance. It steps in if the health insurance company does not cover the high costs for special therapies or for the conversion into a disabled-friendly apartment and supports with special benefits so that footballers get back on their feet as well as possible.

How am I insured for football?

If an accident occurs during football, benefits from several insurance companies can be considered:

Health insurance

If you are injured while playing football, the statutory or private health insurance will initially cover the costs of medical care as well as inpatient treatment and rehabilitation measures. Other financial hurdles that you may face after an accident at football are, for example, loss of earnings, hospital costs and costs for cosmetic surgery. However, these are not covered by health insurance.

Liability insurance

If the sports accident is caused by a third party, their private liability insurance may pay. They are then entitled to compensation for pain and suffering under certain conditions. This can be the case, for example, in the case of gross foul play.

Accident insurance

If you are injured while playing football at a company event, the statutory accident insurance will generally cover you. In this case, the accident is considered an accident at work during company sports. As a member of a football club, you are usually covered by your club's sports accident insurance during training or competitions. However, the shear protection can vary greatly.

If, on the other hand, you train privately or arrange to play football on the sports field in your free time and then injure yourself, it is neither an accident at work nor will your club's accident insurance cover the follow-up costs. Only private accident insurance can offer protection here.

What does private accident insurance cover for football?

Accident insurance covers all the consequences of an accident. This includes acute medical emergencies as well as long-term damage in the form of minor or severe disability or even death.

Unlike statutory accident insurance, which only applies to the workplace, kindergarten, school or university as well as on the direct outward and return journeys, private accident insurance covers the costs incurred as a result of long-term damage and disability after an accident during recreational sports. Private accident insurance pays out money after an injury in football, including the so-called hospital daily allowance and the convalescence allowance. In addition, an accident pension can also be agreed.

Depending on the provider and tariff, private accident insurance also covers the costs of aids that you need for your recovery, such as a wheelchair, crutches, splints or bandages. Private accident insurance may also cover cosmetic operations that have become necessary due to an accident, e.g. during football.

With the Bayerische, benefits resulting from increased exertion and self-movement (except in the Smart tariff) are included. You can find out more about the benefits of the insurance on the product page of our accident insurance.

The benefits of the accident insurance at a glance:

  • Lump-sum payment due to disability (disability benefit)
  • Accident pension in the event of particularly severe impairments
  • Hospital daily allowance
  • Convalescence allowance
  • Cost coverage for cosmetic surgery

Depending on the provider and tariff, other services may be included:

  • Assumption of costs for rehabilitation and spa measures
  • Assistance services

Individual accident protection with the ExistenzBudget

With the ExistenzBudget, Bayerische offers particularly individual protection: It is your safety budget after an accident of up to 10 million euros, from which all the costs actually incurred as a result of the accident are paid, for example treatment costs or the costs of domestic help. If you are no longer able to work due to the accident, this will even pay your actual loss of earnings and compensation for the pension reduction. In addition, you will receive compensation for pain and suffering.

The difference to classic accident protection is that it provides the short-term and long-term financial consequences after an accident, particularly in line with needs. Classic accident insurance pays fixed amounts that are set out in the insurance contract.

Am I covered by the football club?

Anyone who plays football in a club is usually insured by the club's accident insurance. However, the insurance cover is usually geared towards the protection of the sports club and only offers basic protection for the players. In addition to accident protection, this also includes liability insurance for the sports club.

The sums insured by the insurance are rather low and do not cover as much in the event of a serious injury as you may need for your recovery or other aids. In addition, the insurance only covers competitions and training as well as on the way to and from the club grounds.

If you play football privately in your free time, you have no insurance cover from your club's accident insurance. Only private accident insurance covers this.

Is health insurance enough for football?

It is not uncommon for a soccer player to be hospitalized because of an injury due to a collision. The treatment costs are usually paid by the statutory health insurance. It is an important protection for athletes.

However, in the case of a serious injury with long-term consequences, this insurance is not sufficient. It is true that both private and statutory health insurance cover the costs of outpatient and inpatient treatment and, if necessary, rehabilitation measures after an accident at football. However, you must bear the costs for special therapies or aids yourself.

If your sports injury has such serious consequences that it is necessary to renovate your home, it can quickly become a major financial burden. Since serious injuries can quickly occur unintentionally, especially in football, it makes sense to take out private accident insurance. Because it not only protects you on the pitch, but also in the event of all sports accidents in your free time and everyday life.

The most common injuries in football affect the feet and legs. Ankle and knee joints in particular are susceptible. Small injuries and scrapes heal quickly and rarely leave traces. The situation is different, however, in the case of bone fractures, torn ligaments or permanent injuries. In the worst case, occupational disability can be the result or the apartment must be converted to make it suitable for the disabled. In order to protect yourself as an amateur footballer against the usually serious consequences of disability, several insurance policies are recommended.

What insurance do footballers need?

Occupational disability insurance

If an injury in football is so severe that you are absent from work for a longer period of time, occupational disability insurance will support you.

Liability insurance

Private liability insurance is one of the most important insurances for athletes. It covers the usually high costs if, for example, a footballer fouls the opponent so badly during after-work football that the person has to be hospitalised. The claims for damages (compensation for pain and suffering) are covered by liability insurance.

Health insurance

Your statutory or private health insurance covers the costs of medical care and inpatient treatment in the event of an injury and, if necessary, medically necessary rehabilitation measures.

Accident insurance

In order to be fully financially protected after an accident during sports, it is highly advisable to take out private accident insurance. This is because it protects football players financially even in the event of accidents that are not considered an accident at work or are covered by insurance in the sports club. It works for footballers around the clock and worldwide and covers, for example, conversion costs, maintenance costs or offers special services to help them cope with everyday life.

Frequently asked questions about accident insurance for football

What is an accident?

By definition, an accident is an event that suddenly affects the body from the outside, causing the affected person to involuntarily suffer damage to health.

At Bayerische, accident protection goes beyond this. Here you are also covered according to the extended definition of accident. This means that, depending on the tariff, the protection also applies in the event of accidents, for example due to impaired consciousness due to heart attack or stroke or medication. Vaccination or infection damage can also be insured.

What does statutory accident insurance cover?

The statutory accident insurance covers many benefits, including rehabilitation, care allowance and injury benefit - but all this only in the case of accidents that are related to the exercise of the profession. Anyone who exerts themselves in company sports is therefore insured. Those who train privately or take part in competitions, on the other hand, do not.

Is compensation for pain and suffering paid in the event of an accident in football?

Compensation for pain and suffering is always considered if, according to §252 of the German Civil Code (BGB), a third party causes physical or health damage to a person, among other things. However, this must be done intentionally or with gross negligence.

Since in most cases in football it is an oversight in a running duel or duel that leads to an accident, there is usually no claim for compensation for pain and suffering. However, if the person causing the accident grossly violates the applicable rules and results in a sports accident with injury, compensation for pain and suffering can be claimed.

Your added value: With our accident protection ExistenzBudget, we also pay compensation for pain and suffering.

How much compensation for pain and suffering is in football?

There are no specifications on the amount of compensation for pain and suffering. Instead, an individual assessment is made. Among other things, the severity of the injury, the duration of the incapacity for work and possible consequential damage are taken into account.

What are the most common injuries in football?

Injuries in football most often affect the legs and feet. The ankle and knee joints in particular are very vulnerable. Strains, muscle fiber and ligament tears are very common. Broken bones account for almost a quarter of all injuries in football. Sprains, bruises and bruises are also on the list of sports accidents on the pitch.

Typical injuries that can occur when playing football include, for example:

  • Ankle injury
  • Injury to the knee joint
  • Femoral neck fracture
  • Hamstring
  • Torn ligaments, cruciate ligament rupture
  • Zygomatic fracture
  • Concussion

However, footballers can also suffer other injuries, such as a fractured tibia or broken nose.

Since so much can happen in football and the opposing party is often involved, which in turn makes a sports accident so unpredictable, private accident insurance is a sensible protection for football.
